Vamana (Therapeutic Emesis)

Cleanse. Release. Renew.

At Neerozhukkil Vaidyasala, Vamana Karma is one of the five classical Panchakarma therapies used for the purposeful elimination of excess Kapha Dosha. It is a deeply cleansing procedure involving the carefully controlled induction of therapeutic emesis under the supervision of experienced Vaidyas. Described extensively in the Charaka Samhita and Ashtanga Hridaya, Vamana is traditionally recommended for Kapha-related conditions such as allergic asthma, chronic congestion, recurrent cough, certain metabolic imbalances, and specific skin disorders. By clearing excess mucus and Ama from the upper gastrointestinal and respiratory tract, Vamana helps restore digestive strength (Agni), support respiratory comfort, and regain internal balance.

What are the benefits of Vamana therapy?

The purpose of Vamana is to remove excessive Kapha dosha from the stomach and chest region. This traditional purification helps reduce congestion, support easier breathing, improve digestion, and restore balance to both body and mind.

Vamana therapy is safe when done under the guidance of a qualified Vaidya. It is not recommended during pregnancy, for young children, during acute illness, or for individuals with certain cardiac conditions unless specifically advised.

Preparing involves light meals, some internal ghee and oil massage for a few days prior to the process. This creates looseness of the toxins and readiness for effective cleansing.

The emesis will be carefully induced after some calming down time in the process. After the elimination phase, it is normal to feel temporary fatigue followed by a sense of lightness, clarity, and improved breathing comfort.

Traditionally, Vamana is performed once a year, especially in spring (Kapha season). Individuals with strong Kapha imbalance may benefit from seasonal guidance as recommended by their Vaidya.
