Preparatory Procedures: Snehana & Swedana

In the ancient healing system of Ayurveda, the journey toward profound purification and restoration begins with two essential preparatory steps: Snehana (oleation) and Swedana (sudation). These therapies form the basic stage of the broader detoxification and rejuvenation program called Panchakarma which gives the body lubrication, heat and circulation to gradually loosen the toxins (Ama) and vitiated doshas in order to be safely eliminated. By preparing the body in this way, it is ensured that the later cleansing treatments are effective and safe.

How It Works

01

It is done by using medicated oil or ghee to soften tissues, lubricate the body and loosen toxins.

02

This promotes blood flow, feeds the tissues, equalizes doshas as well as calms the nervous system.

03

This is followed by the use of steam to induce sweat and to clean up internal canals.

04

The combination treatment eliminates toxins, removes stiffness, and prepares the human body for Panchakarma.

FAQs

Find answers to common questions about our Ayurvedic treatments, consultation process, and services.

What is the primary goal of Snehana and Swedana?

These treatments assist in the body to eliminate toxins, loosening them, giving them away, self-managing energy, and enhancing the circulation.

The common periods are 3 to 7 days, based on the body build and just general health.

Do not take these when you have fever, dehydration, cardiac issues or when pregnant. One should seek the advice of an Ayurvedic practitioner in order to begin.

They moderate hyperactive Vata and Kapha, enhance the circulation of life energy, open the body channels and prepare the body to greater purification.

Snehana primarily pacifies Vata by oil and lubrication whereas Swedana pacifies Kapha and Vata with heat and perspiration to restore harmony.
