Neerozhukkil Vaidyasala: Kizhi (Herbal Pouch Therapy)

At Neerozhukkil Vaidyasala , Kizhi is a traditional Ayurvedic fomentation therapy that combines the healing power of herbs, warmth, and touch. Kizhi comes from the Swedana Chikitsa (sudation therapy) branch of Ayurveda, and specifically works to improve circulation, loosen joints, and facilitate any trapped toxins (Ama) that are stuck in the muscles and binds. Kizhi balances aggravated Vata and Kapha Doshas, helping to release chronic pain, inflammation, and muscle fatigue while also returning flexibility and stability. Depending on your condition, the therapy may use Elakizhi (herbal leaf pouch), Podikizhi (powder pouch), or Njavarakizhi (rice and milk pouch).

How It Works

01

A light Abhyanga (oil massage) prepares the body, opens the pores, and activates circulation to receive the herbal fomentation.

02

Fresh herbs, powders, or rice are used in combination with medicated oils packed into muslin cloth to create warm therapeutic pouches.

03

The warm pouches are pressed and massaged over the affected area in circular and linear motion to release tension and promote healing.

04

A short Swedana (steam therapy) follows to enhance absorption before allowing an opportunity to rest the body so the herbs can work more profoundly.

What conditions can Kizhi help with?

Kizhi is highly effective for conditions such as arthritis, frozen shoulder, spondylitis, back pain, muscle spasms, and sports injuries. Kizhi will decrease inflammation, improve circulation, and tighten tissues while balancing Vata and Kapha Doshas, which would help you to maintain long term relief.

Unlike a regular massage, Kizhi uses heat and herbal pouches to combine compression with oil therapy. This method draws out toxins, relaxes tender muscles, and revitalizes the joints deeper than just an oil massage.

A normal treatment course will run from 7 to 14 days based on the severity of your conditions. Chronic conditions may require several courses of treatment for lasting results under the recommendations of the Vaidya.

Yes, for therapeutic conditions like arthritis or muscular stiffness it is better to complete Kizhi daily under supervision. If it is for purposes of detox or general relaxation then generally 2-3 times per week is adequate.
