Raktamokshana (Bloodletting Therapy)

Purify. Revive. Heal.

Raktamokshana is a blood cleansing therapy practiced at Neerozhukkil Vaidyasala. It is one of the five core Panchakarma therapies and is designed to remove vitiated rakta (impure blood) and the accompanying pitta dosha. Raktamokshana removes deeply embedded toxins (ama) from the blood, thus restoring internal balance and promoting skin health.
Raktamokshana works as a preventive as well as curative therapy. It has been shown to effectively treat chronic skin disorders, inflammatory disorders, varicose veins, hypertension, and stagnation of circulation. When performed under the supervision of an experienced physician, it is highly regarded among blood purification therapies in Ayurveda because it rejuvenates/renews the blood (rakta) and restores radiant, healthy, disease-free circulation.

What are the goals of Raktamokshana?

Raktamokshana removes impure rakta and excess pitta. It purifies rakta dhatu, alleviates inflammatory processes, and improves skin complexion and general immunity, making it well suited for chronic skin and blood disorders.

Based on the condition(s) being treated, Raktamokshana can be performed by leech therapy (Jalaukavacharana), venesection (Siravedha), sringa, alabu, or needle pricking (Prachchhana). All these methods are chosen specifically for safety, accuracy, and therapeutic value.

Yes. The leeches are medically cleansed, the procedure is performed by trained practitioners, and the leeches are disposed of and not reused. It is a safe, quasi-painless procedure that results in little or no scarring.

Eczema, psoriasis, acne, varicose veins, hypertension, arthritis, and inflammatory conditions related to the vitiation of pitta or rakta are some of the conditions that respond best to this treatment.

The frequency of raktamokshana therapy depends on the condition of the patient. Mild conditions may require one or two sessions a month, and chronic conditions will require multiple sittings under the supervision of a qualified physician.
