Virechana (Therapeutic Purgation)

Purify. Balance. Revitalize.

Virechana Karma is a detoxification Panchakarma treatment for Pitta dosha in the liver, intestines, and blood. This ancient therapeutic procedure is widely discussed in both the Charaka Samhita and Ashtanga Hridaya, describing it as a purgative therapy for Pitta-related digestive challenges. It works through the use of medicinal herbs to offer a controlled and safe therapeutic purgation. Virechana removes excess Pitta and Ama, supports metabolic balance, and contributes to improved clarity, mood, skin appearance, and digestion. It is traditionally used for liver disorders, acidity, skin eruptions, and chronic inflammatory conditions. Each step of Virechana Karma is performed gently and at the correct timing based on the individual’s Prakriti and current Dosha imbalance.

How It Works

01

Step 1: Medicated ghee will soften toxins and support bowel movement and motility of the gastrointestinal tract.

02

Step 2: Medicinal steam will help dilate the channels (Srotas) and move Pitta toward the digestive tract.

03

Step 3: Herbal purgatives, e.g., Trivrit Leha or Avipattikar Churna, will be administered to obtain a controlled elimination.

04

Step 4: A gradual Samsarjana Krama diet will help rebuild Agni while reintroducing nourishment to support digestion and strength.

FAQs

Find answers to common questions about our Ayurvedic treatments, consultation process, and services.

What are the differences between Virechana and Vamana?

Vamana eliminates Kapha from the upper channels of the body while Virechana eliminates Pitta from the lower digestive area. Virechana effectively cleanses the intestines and liver, normalizing the metabolic fire while cooling and rejuvenating the body from within.

Individual experiences may vary. The most common feelings after Virechana include lightness, clarity, and calm. Digestion improves in the days, weeks, and months following the treatment, as does energy level and skin texture. You may feel mild fatigue as the cleansing takes place, which is usually followed by a renewed sense of energy.

The body is prepared for Virechana through a few days of internal oleation, external oil massage and steam therapy. Participants can expect to follow a light Pitta-pacifying diet before and after the treatment to optimize results.

Virechana is ideally practiced once or twice a year, especially in the Fall when Pitta is naturally heightened. Regular, guided detoxification can help maintain digestive health and balance over the long term.
