Neerozhukkil Vaidyasala: Nasya (Nasal Cleansing Therapy)

At Neerozhukkil Vaidyasala, Nasya Karma is a traditional Ayurvedic treatment that addresses detoxification, nourishment, and rejuvenation of the cranial region. Warm medicated oil or ghee infused with herbs is gently instilled into the nostrils. By flushing out toxins that have accumulated in the sinuses, it is believed to improve respiratory capacity while enhancing clarity of mind and awareness. Nasya Karma is described in the Ashtanga Hridaya and the Charaka Samhita and is said to provide balance to Kapha and Vata doshas which limit the potential for disease in the head, neck, or brain. Nasya Karma is indicated for chronic sinusitis, headaches, migraines, allergies, or other stress-related conditions, and can help with promoting calmness, as well as mental clarity and vitality.

How It Works

01

1. A warm herbal oil massage is applied to the face, neck, and shoulders to relax muscles and loosen Kapha in the sinus passages.

02

2. You will be placed in mild herbal steam to open the nasal channels (srotas) and soften excess mucus so that it can be released more easily.

03

3. The Vaidya will pour a small amount of medicated oil (Anu Taila, Shadbindu Taila, or Ghee) into each nostril.

04

4. Gentle cleansing follows, and you are given time to rest while the herbal oils work through the channels of the head.

How does Nasya therapy work in Ayurveda?

Nasya helps clear excess Kapha from the nasal and sinus region by lubricating, cleansing, and opening the channels of the head. It supports easier breathing, mental clarity, and comfort in the head and neck.

Once per week or every two weeks is perfect for preventative recommendations. For chronic sinusitis or headaches, a Vaidya may recommend a course of therapeutic Nasya therapy for 7-14 consecutive days.

Yes. Pratimarsha Nasya (gentle daily oiling), Shiro-Virechana Nasya (cleansing type), and Brimhana Nasya (nourishing type) are dependent upon the balance of Dosha and condition.

Generally safe, but not recommended during fever, immediately after meals, or in very young children. Your Vaidya will determine the correct type and oil based on your Prakriti.

Common formulations include Anu Taila, Shadbindu Taila, and medicated Ghee. Depending on the condition, Anu Taila can be used for sinus health and ghee is used as a nourishing, cooling agent.
